PURSUIT OF MEMORY

I recently saw Nick Cave's film 20,000 Days On Earth- a beautifully shot reflection and meditation on his live, art and poetry, and was incredibly inspired.  It has also led me to rediscover some of his music particularly his most recent album Push The Sky Away.

There were a few little pearls he dropped in the film that struck a chord with me so I thought I'd write them down.  Firstly that his greatest fear is loosing his memory.  Because memory is what we are and we spend our lives chasing memories.  Creating narratives of our lives by telling our story over and over and mythologising our memories.

He adds that the minute you fully understand something, the less interesting it becomes.. and in this respect it is the pursuit of memories that is what makes art.

With startlingly frank insights and an intimate portrayal of the artistic process, the film examines what makes us who we are, and celebrates the transformative power of the creative spirit.
